Biography

  • Tyler Gregory Okonma better known by his stage name Tyler, The Creator, is an American rapper and record producer from California.

Tyler showed an interest to music from an incredibly young age, at the age of seven, he would take the cover out of an album's case and create covers for his own imaginary albums including a track list with song times before he could even make music. At fourteen, he taught himself to play the piano and music became a constant in his ever changing home life, he attended twelve different schools over his twelve year education.

On December 25, 2009, Tyler self released his first album entitled 'Bastard' which went on to receive rave reviews from critics, including Pitchfork Media who placed it at #32 on their top 100 albums of the year list. He followed this up with 'Goblin' which secured him a one album deal with XL Recordings. His next album 'Wolf' was released in 2013 and was produced solely by Tyler, featuring guest appearances from Frank Ocean, Mike G, Domo Genesis, Earl Sweatshirt, Left Brain and Hodgy Beats.

Tyler has found himself at the centre of negative media attention for his use of homophobic slurs, frequently the use of the epithet faggot in his lyrics and on social media. He personally denied the accusations of homophobia, stating, "I'm not homophobic. I just say faggot and use gay as an adjective to describe stupid shit," and, "I'm not homophobic. I just think faggot hits and hurts people". He appears to understand very little of the impact of his derogatory use of language. However Tyler, The Creator was the first to openly show support for fellow Odd Future member Frank Ocean after he revealed he had a relationship with another younger man. The young rapper has managed to collect a number of nominations at the MTV Music Video Awards, along with acclaim for his solo discography and work within Odd Future despite numerous controversies surrounding his lyrical content.

Live reviews

  • Tyler, The Creator

I have been a fan of Tyler for a long time, as well as the whole group of OFWGKTA, and seeing him live was something I had on my bucket list. I went in with high expectations for his show, already knowing of how much energy and enthusiasm he puts into his live performances. What I got at The Forum went above and beyond anything I could have hoped for. The crowd was amazing, knowing every song and shouting and yelling along with unrivaled amounts of energy. Tyler was just as, or even more, energetic and knew how to work the crowd perfectly by interaction, be it between moments talking about random things or talking about his music and singing. I was blown away by the fact that at least twice he called to stop the song just to start it again because he loved how into it the crowd was and wanted to see it again. Of course we, the crowd, loved it and drained our lungs out with every lyric. I've seen the Arctic Monkeys, Sleigh Bells, Banks, Pendulum, Wolf Alice and others and can honestly say Tyler was the best overall. Everyone exited the venue with shirts soaked in sweat and with cracking voices, with grins on their face from having experienced something they'd never forget. If you like Tyler, or by extension OFWGKTA, you have to see him live if you get the opportunity, you can never anticipate how godly his live performances will be. I will definitely be waiting for his next visit to see him again.

  • The show started almost on time with a short DJ warm up by Taco and quickly two other Odd Future boys - Tyler himself and Jasper Dolphin - entered the stage. Tyler performed both old and new songs, mostly his upbeat hits and in between songs he'd converse with the crowd in his own down to earth way. Tyler is an amazing performer, he knows when the crowd gets too hot and needs a break or when we need a little bit more jumping to liven up the mood. The concert was intimate despite it being sold out because of Tylers genuine and unique personality and he almost makes it sound like he's speaking to a bunch of friends rather than a bunch of sweaty fans. The concert lasted for about an hour and a half. I was front row on the ground and it was wild at times and very crowded, so if that's something you do not like; go to the balconies instead (the people I was with chose to do that and says it is more calm) because with an audience mostly consisting of semi-drunk teenage boys, it is bound to go a bit crazy at times. But as I mentioned, Tyler and the two other boys were very aware of how we as an audience were feeling and you felt safe. To sum it up, it was a very intimate and very much how you would expect it to be, if you have followed Tyler as a fan for a while concert and definitely in my top best concerts ever. A must for fans of him and OFWGKTA.

  • To be quite honest, I am not the most hardcore fan of Yellowcard and I only know a few of their earlier songs. Regardless of that, however, I actually had quite a lot of fun at their gig at Fuji Rock Festival 2013 last summer. I think their strong fan base all over the world and how they can really rally up a crowd is one aspect that makes this band so fun to watch live. The fans really get wild and stay wild for the entire concert as soon as the band walks on the stage. The crowd just crowd surf each other and go absolutely nuts and it's an entertaining sight! The bands music is extremely loud and you can hear it throughout the entire venue and I feel that Yellowcard represents a lot of what rock is about nowadays. It's about making music that allows for everybody Iistening to come together and enjoy the music and the festival vibe and I think Yellowcard did a good job of that in my opinion despite not knowing much about them! Yellowcard is definitely a great concert for those who want to go apeshit with the influence of rock!

  • The doors opened at 20:30.

The timetable said the show will start at 22:00 but taco's set started at 22:00.

The bass and sound setup was good and wasn't to hard.

When Tyler came on stage, Everybody went crazy. There where moshpits the hole show.

The biggest moshpit was at the last song Cherry Bomb.

Tyler did it pretty good on stage. Sometimes he had to take a break because his astma. But Taco and Jasper continued the song if that happened.

Me and my friend visited the movie he organised in the afternoon so we got priority for the show. This was good because it wasn't that busy at the merchandise store . When the other people came in, I'm sure I couldn't get the Cherry Bomb 6 panel. After the show they sold out.

Because the delay of the show we missed our last train so we spend our night at the station. Maybe thats a tip for the next time. Do the show a bit earlier!

But after all it was amazing!

  • Amazing experience... Taco was an amazing DJ doing a great job of hyping the crowd up. Then Vince came out and killed it just a great set. the stage design was like no other the rotating screens were really cool and it was nice that they put timers up so we knew when Vince would come out. Tyler's performance was just amazing he performed for 2 1/2 hours and he really is a great performer, he performed both old and new songs there wasn't a favorite of mine that he missed. The stage design was so cool with a huge tree for Tyler to stand on. Tyler really cares about his fans he sang happy birthday to this one dude which was so sick. The show was sold out so 2,400 people were all singing the words to his songs which was just amazing the best concert experience I have ever had I have to go see him live again.

  • Okay, so straight up, the venue kinda sucked. Tyler was playing The Forum, in London. The venue itself was pretty decent, big floor space and actually a decent amount of room. The security were pretty cool too. Only problem is, before Tyler goes on, they turn off the fans keeping the place cool, so for the next two hours, it is boiling, like people are walking around soaked in sweat. BUT TYLER was amazing. The videos on Youtube and junk do him no justice, he was awesome. Taco came on and DJ'd to get everyone hyped which was awesome. Tyler was talking to the crowd and it was wild. He played all his decent songs, playing stuff from all three albums, and everyone fucking loved it. The crowd were sick too, everyone in GOLF shit, 10/10 performance. (Wish he had played Sandwitches though)

  • Man Oh Man is Tyler AWESOME OR WHAT? I can honestly say that Tyler fans are the most energetic fans I've ever seen, me included haha. I've never been in a mosh pit that was this crazy before, and I loved every second of it. You will not regret going to see Tyler because he is just that awesome. This was my first time seeing him in concert and I was super happy at how approachable and funny he was. He knows how to work the crowd and how to get literally every last person on their feet and stomping the roof off of the building. I can’t wait until he come the SF again. Tyler I’m waiting for you!!

P.S - HE BROUGHT TACO AND JASPER!!!!!

  • I loved every min of his performance.. I loved and appreciated the re-verb of ''tell these black kids they can be who they are'' means so much to us. And I know this isn't his favorite album and It didn't come out as this ''star studded'' album. But there's no one couldn't have said it better than Tyler at this time. So I want to thank him for that. Maybe he will finally be able to score a movie that would be so !!!!

    Sincerely,

    trapped suburban black kid

P.S Get that verse right bitch.

  • From a guy who’s grown up with Tyler and used his music to get through rough patches and hard times after waiting 8 years to see him live, I can honestly say it was the greatest thing I’ve ever experienced. I’ve never been happier in life than I was that night, stood from my seat the entire time and went word for word with Tyler himself to all the songs he performed Is something I could only dream of. I plan on going every year for as long as he continue touring from now on.

  • Rex Orange County opened with dope beach vibes then later joined in on "Boredom". After Rex finished, Tyler carried the show alone reflecting the energy of the whole crowd. He is a lightening storm on stage. He said that one of his goals on this tour is to see the crowd dance and his beats strongly reflect that sentiment. If you find yourself lucky at one of his shows, do yourself a favor; wear sneakers and don't bring your drink into the mosh pit, you're in for a treat.
