Biography

  • Django Django are an indie band hailing from London, England who formed in 2009. They became one of the most critically acclaimed guitar acts of the 2010’s with their 2012 debut album, and have played festivals and headlined concert halls all over the world off the back of it.

The story of Django Django sounds a lot like fate in its own way, like there was some higher power behind the scenes keeping the band members together wherever the four of them might go. If there is a higher power involved then we owe them quite heavily, cos the world would be an ever so slightly duller place without the bands understated yet ecstatic indie-electronica. The quartet, consisting of David Maclean on drums and production, Vincent Neff on guitar and vocals, Jimmy Dixon on bass and Tommy Grace on synths, originally met in Edinburgh, Scotland while studying at the Scottish capital’s world famous college of art.

All four of them decided to move down to Dalston, East London together after their course finished in 2009, when not only was the area starting to become seriously cool, but also a hotbed for new music. When Maclean and Neff decided to form a band together themselves, the only line-up changes they’ve ever had to make was to stick Dixon and Grace, the other people they’d moved from Edinburgh to London with, on the bass guitar and synths, respectively. The band immediately gelled, and by the end of 2009 they’d released their first double A-side single “Storm/Love’s Heart” and were already attracting a local following with their debut live shows.

Since then the band have been unstoppable in their rise to the top. Their live shows got bigger and bigger and their single started to get the attention of mainstream press like The Guardian and the NME. By 2011, the band had signed to Because Music, making them label-mates with Metronomy and Justice, and their debut album was released in January 2012. An instant hit with critics, it was given five stars out of five by the aforementioned Guardian and nominated for that years Mercury Music Award. By 2013 it was starting to pay off commercially as well, going platinum in France and the campaign for it was capped off by a headline slot on the NME Awards Tour and a second on the bill slot on the 2013 Glastonbry Festival’s Park Stage.

Truly, Django Django are a band with the world at their feet. Where they go next, not to mention the music they’ll create, will be a fascinating and exciting thing to watch and hear. Them at the peak of their powers will be unlike anything we’ll ever see, and for that reason, they come highly recommended.

Live reviews

  • Django Django

In 2012 Django Django made a bit of a splash with their debut album. The self-titled work from Edinburgh-via-London art pop quartet was nominated for the 2013 Mercury Prize, and obtained glowing reviews from NME and the Guardian.

The hype was not misplaced. Django Django comprises an intriguing combination of electro synth, acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies. Apparently describing a faltering relationship, the album focuses on abstract imagery, with ‘Love’s Dart’s’ refrain reminding the muse that ‘if you walk in circles you’ll find yourself back at the start.’

Performing live, Django Django deliver the echo-slung vocals of single, ‘Default’ with precision. And the tribal drums and electro whooshes of ‘Hail Bop’ please their trendy audiences. Since the band currently possesses just one studio album, there can be moments where things get a bit samey. One’s mind begins to wish for a little more variation amongst the succession of electronica tunes echoing from Tommy Grace’s synth. Thankfully, though, ‘Firewater’ comes to the rescue with its more acoustic, rock and roll feel, showcasing Vincent Neff’s voice and Jimmy Dixon’s bass.

Django Django generally perform in mid-sized venues before a backdrop of flashing smiley-faced graphics. Their lively gigs combine cool performance with musical intricacy. While not entirely musically unprecedented, the quartet remains a breath of fresh air.

  • London rockers Django Django caused huge waves with the psychedelic sounds found on their self titled debut album which was released in 2012. Since then they have seen their international reputation explode thanks to the support of British publications including The Guardian and NME magazine.

With the opportunities to tour extensively and globally, the quartet has crafted a live show that is described more as an immersive experience as opposed to a simple rock gig. From the opening warped tones of 'Hail Bop' the audience are captivated by the other worldly instrumentals and psych-heavy lighting display.

They go about recreating material from their debut but with extended instrumentals and long, warped bass lines there is a feel of no rush when they perform. The audience cheers in all the right places and applaud enthusiastically yet during the kaleidoscopic tracks they appear in a state of entranced sedation. It is broken for fan favourite 'Life's A Beach' perhaps their most recognisable track as the crowd surge and dance as one. Django Django have a unique sound and an even more unique live show that must be seen to be believed.

  • This was one of my favourite albums of 2012. Unfortunately I missed Django Django on that tour, fortunately I caught them last night.

There is an attention to percussion on their 1st album which is riveting but could have been lost in a live performance. On the contrary, the foursome hailing from Edinburgh use every instrument and device (including a miced cardboard box!) at their disposal to animate their music with a throbbing rythm reminiscent of free-form drum circles.

In fact, a lot of their songs were jamed out into longer, deeper affairs which blended into each other to create the musical continuum feel of a rave. Add their beach harmonies and dynamic stage presence and it felt more like a party, not a concert.

A futuristic jungle beach party. The venue was the right size and the crowd exuberant creating a perfect storm of frenzied energy. A truly epic show.

  • Exceeded our expectations and our expectations were set high because we had planned this event for a long time. My son and wife joined me for a 6 hour drive to catch a great small venue show at Union Transfer in Philadelphia. Don't understand why the Django's aren't a bigger attraction, but we were glad they aren't otherwise they wouldn't be playing small rooms like this. Vincent's energy, diversity and creativity of sound and lyrics, and the band's combined musicianship make this a must see. Only disappointment was that Shot Down and Found You weren't part of the playlist, but I'll get over it. These guys seem to be real and humble. We are looking forward to what's next. Wish them continued success.

  • Awesome show at the Bluebird on Tuesday night. Great energy, rocked the old favorites and new stuff sounded sweet too. Got to meet Jimmy and Tommy across the street for a couple beers after the show before they headed off for L.A. Super cool guys, humble and very friendly. So glad they came to Denver! Hope they're back again soon. Don't miss a chance to see these guys when they come to your town.

  • While I love Django Django's music, I had no idea what an amazing band they would be live. They sounded amazing and were incredibly fun. The music had mush more dimension live. At times they brought top mind the old post punk bands, at other times they reminded me of the dancy vibe of Primal Scream, but they were always original. I can't wait to see them again.

  • Absolutely great gig, Django Django (and the Camden crowd) were full of energy and I enjoyed the night from start to encore! The tracks from the new album went down pretty well and the tracks everyone knew from the first album had been beefed up to be even better than before - superb!

  • Amazing concert! Fantastic line up, with nice lighting. The small room made it more cosy, so everyone wat getting loose. The support act "Steeling Sheep", was also very nice. Same kind of music, but different.
